Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev.Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev was born on July 6, 1940, in Chemolgan village, in the Kaskelen district of the Almaty oblast. In 1967 he graduated from the Higher Technical Institution affiliated to the Karaganda Metal Plant with a doctorate in economic sciences.
A member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, International Engineering Academy and the Academy of Social Sciences of the Russian Federation.
Honorary Professor of the Kazakh National al-Farabi University.
Honorary member of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.
Honorary Professor of the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University.
From 1960 until 1969 he worked at the Karaganda Metal Plant.
During 1969–1973 he was involved in party and Komsomol activities in the town of Temirtau (Karaganda oblast.)
From 1973–1977 he was Secretary of the Party Committee of the Karaganda Metal Plant.
From 1977 until 1979 he was 2nd Secretary of the Karaganda oblast Party Committee.
In 1979–1984 N. Nazarbayev was Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan.
In 1984 -1989 he was Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh SSR.
From 1989 to 1991 he was the 1st Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan. At the same time from February until April 1990 he was Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR.
Since April 1990 N. Nazarbayev has been the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On December 1st, 1990 the first countrywide elections for the President of the Republic took place. N. A Nazarbayev won with 98.7 percent of the vote.
On April 29, 1995 as a result of a referendum the presidential term was prolonged until 2000.
On January 10th 1999 he was elected President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for a second time, having gained 79.78 percent of the vote.
On December 4th 2005 he was elected President of the Republic of Kazakhstan having gained 91.15 percent of the electorate’s votes.
